DIY Fridays – Raíces DIY Crowdfunding Fundraiser Project

You’ve heard of Kickstarter and Indiegogo?  Crowdfunding projects where you have to reach a certain goal by a certain date to receive any funding at all?  Well, Raíces opted to get away from the idea of a middleman fundraising platform and do it ourselves – our own crowdfunding fundraiser project.  And we are taking this week’s return of the DIY Fridays column to tell you all about it, because both the fundraiser and the project we are seeking to fund are being done DIY-style and we need your help and support. You can read on about the project and check out some of our photos from the trip below, but please take a minute to donate now to this DIY cause:

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Raíces Cultural Center’s co-directors recently returned from our cultural exchange trip to the island of Puerto Rico, where we spent a week documenting cultural and eco-sustainability movements throughout the island.

We traveled from Plenitud Eco-Educational Initiatives in Las Marías to the 5th Bomba Research Conference in San Juan and Arroyo to the Encuentro de Tambores in Juncos.  We met  musicians, permaculturalists, archivists, sustainable farmers, artisans and artists, dancers and culture bearers and learned about their projects, ideas and passions.  We took over 850 photos and videos and we want to share them with you, our community and a worldwide audience through the Raíces Online Cultural Archive.

Before we left to begin our cultural and eco-cultural exploration and fact finding, we secured a grant from the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission to staff our archive with a digital librarian, who will be helping us to preserve and share the information, photos and videos we collected through free, public online digital library. We are seeking to raise matching funds of $2,400 to help cover the cost of equipment, post production work, outreach and programming consultants for the online archive and a community screening event for the videos we are working on right now. Before and during the trip we raised over $200, but we are still working to meet our goal. Please make a donation to lend a helping hand and support the preservation and spreading of cultural and ecological knowledge and information:

We have been writing, cataloging, editing videos and photos and planning with our digital archivist since we returned. We attached some photos and video to this post to give you a sneak peak of what is to come, but our goal is to have the entire 2013 Puerto Rico cultural exchange trip media edited, cataloged, uploaded to the archive and ready to share, with educational descriptions and information, by the beginning of spring 2014. In the meantime, we will continue to give you a glimpse at the media and information we brought back through blog articles, videos, sneak peak photo albums and mailing list updates. We are eager to reach our fundraising goal and make this dream a reality! Please share the link to this announcement with friends and family who you think would help to support this project, on your social media pages and message boards and by forwarding it through email.
