What to Expect

Caribbean Percussion: The Heartbeat of the Islands

At Raíces, our drum classes explore the deep rhythmic connection between Puerto Rico and Cuba. We provide a structured environment to master the techniques, history, and ensemble language of these world-class traditions.

What You’ll Study

Our curriculum bridges the Antilles, focusing on the technical foundations of both Bomba and Afro-Cuban percussion.

  • Afro-Puerto Rican Traditions: Master the language of the Barril de Bomba. We cover essential rhythms like Sicá and Yubá, focusing on the conversation between the Buleador (rhythm) and Subidor (lead), alongside the Cuá and Maraca.

  • Afro-Cuban Foundations: Dive into the world of the Conga (Tumbadora) and the Clave. You’ll learn the “Tumbao” patterns, the essential 6/8 “Bembé” feel, and the precise techniques of the Güiro and Chekeré.

The Raíces Approach

This isn’t just a drum circle—it is a disciplined study of the drum.

  • Technical Mastery: Learn the “Open,” “Slap,” and “Bass” tones to produce a professional, resonant sound.

  • Ensemble Playing: Understand how the different layers of percussion—from the high-end scrape of the Güiro to the deep pulse of the Barril—lock together.

  • Cultural Context: Every rhythm has a story. We share the history and the “Why” behind the music we play.

Spring/Summer Classes are currently closed to registration, we will offer a new cycle with expanded course offerings starting in September.
