Join Raíces Cultural Center virtually every other Tuesday at 7pm for our Caribbean Culture & History Discussion Group. For each meeting, the group will be assigned a reading, viewing or an audio clip to discuss.
In our current cycle we are reading the collection Aftershocks of Disaster: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm, edited by Yarimar Bonilla and Marisol LeBrón. A preview of the book (pages 1-76) is available here. The first edition of the book is currently available for 40% off from Haymarket Books. Order here.
All members are encouraged to submit a discussion question in advance of each meeting to encourage collaborative inquiry and dialogue. Members can also suggest topics for discussion as well as books, articles, films and podcasts to focus on for future meetings.
READINGS: “Our Fellow Americans: Why Calling Puerto Ricans ‘Americans’ Will Not Save Them” by Frances Negrón-Mutaner and “US Media Depictions of Climate Migrants: The Recent Case of Puerto Rican ‘Exodus‘” by Hilda Lloréns from Aftershocks of Disaster (pg. 113-133).
Visit our Branch of Community History program page to learn more about this new initiative.
