Join Raíces Cultural Center virtually every other Tuesday at 7pm for our Caribbean Culture & History Discussion Group. For each meeting, the group will be assigned a reading, viewing or an audio clip to discuss.
In our current cycle we are reading the collection Aftershocks of Disaster: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm, edited by Yarimar Bonilla and Marisol LeBrón. A preview of the book (pages 1-76) is available here. The book is currently available for 30% off from Haymarket Books. Order here.
All members are encouraged to submit a discussion question in advance of each meeting to encourage collaborative inquiry and dialogue. Members can also suggest topics for discussion as well as books, articles, films and podcasts to focus on for future meetings.
DISCUSSION MATERIALS – April 5
READINGS: “Art and a Threshold Called Dignity” by TIAGO (Richard Santiago) and “Picking up the Pieces” by Adrian Roman from Aftershocks of Disaster (pg. 191-210).
ACTION ITEM: Art share! Bring one example of a work of art, art project, or arts organization that is politically engaged or works to share a message that is important to you. Can be related to Hurricane María, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean or any political or social movement that you have a close connection to.
We will also do a reading of the poem “sinvergüenza sin nación/sinvergüenza with no nation” by Raquel Salas Rivera to close out the meeting.
