Raíces Caribbean Culture & History Discussion Group

May 3, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Join Raíces Cultural Center virtually every other Tuesday at 7pm for our Caribbean Culture & History Discussion Group. For each meeting, the group will be assigned a reading, viewing or an audio clip to discuss.

In our current cycle we are reading the collection Aftershocks of Disaster: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm, edited by Yarimar Bonilla and Marisol LeBrón. A preview of the book (pages 1-76) is available here. The first edition of the book is currently available for 40% off from Haymarket Books. Order here.

All members are encouraged to submit a discussion question in advance of each meeting to encourage collaborative inquiry and dialogue. Members can also suggest topics for discussion as well as books, articles, films and podcasts to focus on for future meetings.

DISCUSSION MATERIALS – May 3

READINGS: “Dismantling Public Education in Puerto Rico” by Rima Brusi and Isar Godreau from Aftershocks of Disaster (pg. 234-249) and “Department of Education Is Planning a New Wave of School Closings” by Tatiana Diáz Ramos and José M. Encarnación Martínez from Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (en español).

ACTION ITEM: Please bring one current or historical resource to share- a website, podcast or radio show,  journal, etc- that you consider to be a source of information about the issue of the public education crisis in Puerto Rico or a resource or tool for local and diasporic action regarding this issue. Example: Education Category on the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo’s website.
