Join Raíces Cultural Center virtually every other Tuesday at 7pm for our Caribbean Culture & History Discussion Group. For each meeting, the group will be assigned a reading, viewing or an audio clip to discuss.
In our current cycle we are reading the collection Aftershocks of Disaster: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm, edited by Yarimar Bonilla and Marisol LeBrón. A preview of the book (pages 1-76) is available here. The first edition of the book is currently available for 40% off from Haymarket Books. Order here.
All members are encouraged to submit a discussion question in advance of each meeting to encourage collaborative inquiry and dialogue. Members can also suggest topics for discussion as well as books, articles, films and podcasts to focus on for future meetings.
READINGS: Aftershocks of Disaster, pg. 80-109.
This will finish out the section 2 of the book, “Narrating the Trauma” that we began with our Investigative and Independent Journalism discussion on 12/7. This set of readings is made up of 6 short chapters that narrate the experiences of the storm in different formats, from personal storytelling to visual art to poetry.
